It was the \u201cvery costly\u201d ointment of spikenard with which Mary wiped the feet of Jesus Vohn 12:3-5). The Indian name jatamansi refers to the bearded appearance of the fibrous rhizomes, or \u201cspikes\u201d, which were supposed to resemble ears of corn.<\/p>\n<h3>Growth<\/h3>\n<p>Fully hardy; grow in gritty, well-drained, poorish soil, in a rockery or similar situation, but provide midday or partial shade and plenty of moisture to keep roots cool.<\/p>\n<h3>Parts used<\/h3>\n<p>Roots dried for use in decoctions; volatile oil distilled from roots.<\/p>\n<h3>Uses<\/h3>\n<h4>Medicinal<\/h4>\n<p>An important herb in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years, the root has antiseptic, bitter tonic properties and is soothing to the nervous system.
