This plant was an ingredient of the expensive perfumed unguents of the Romans and ancient Eastern nations, prized for the durability of its scent. The Indian name jatamansi refers to the bearded appearance of the fibrous rhizomes, or \u201cspikes\u201d, which were supposed to resemble ears of corn.<\/p>\n
